Tactics, Techniques and Procedures

Crew Workflow

The procedures described here aim to ensure a common view of the workflow during assignments in order to facilitate the change of staff. Pilots and WSOs knows who do what and when even if it’s the first time flying together.

The division of responsibilities between the front and back seats is very different than on other platforms such as the F-14, here both crew members control 90% of the F-15E's abilities. This means in a way that the coordination within the crew needs to be more structured and well practiced unlike the F-14 where it comes more naturally who does what due to the fact that some systems are limited to the front/back seat.

General responsibilities

  • Crewmember in control of the aircraft
- Flying
- Accomplish procedures in need of immediate response (Gear/flaps up, etc.)
- Call for checklist items as required
  • Crewmember not in control of the aircraft
- Perform navigation duties as required
- Assist in monitoring flight progress
- Assist in monitoring systems and detecting system malfuncions
- Initiate required checklist items
- Monitor instruments during climbs/descents and advise of any deviations from established parameters

Responsibilities by role:

  • Pilot
- Flight coordination
- Air-to-Air combat
- Comms within own flight
  • WSO
- Setup and manage weapons, radios, waypoints etc.
- AN/APG-70 Radar
- AN/AAQ-14 LANTIRN TGT Pod
- Air-to-Ground combat
- Comms with Tower, AWACS and other flights

Airfield

Startup

You find the Quickstart Procedure here.
Steps highlighted in red/blue (light/dark version) should not be skipped or passed before carried out. All other steps between those marked red/blue can be performed in any order.

e.g
- The pilot must notify the WSO when R engine is up before proceeding to start the next one.
- The pilot must check with the WSO that the position is correct before starting INS ALIGN.

These steps are designed to minimize the risk of errors during start-up and to synchronize the crew and flight.

Taxi / Takeoff

Taxi and Takeoff according to SOP
You find the pre-takeoff checklist here.

  • Normal Takeoff
- Throttle to 82%
- Release brakes
- Throttle to FULL MIL/MAX AB
- Stick half way back at rotation speed -> 10° pitch attitude
  • Max Performance Takeoff
- Throttle to 82%
- Release brakes
- Throttle to FULL MIL/MAX AB
- Stick full back at 10kts below nose wheel lift-off speed and rotate to 12° pitch attitude.

Climb

  • MIL Power
- Drag index of 60 or less, climb at 350 KCAS to M0.9, then maintain M0.9 to cruise altitude.
- Drag index greater than 60, climb at 300 KCAS to M0.75, then maintain M0.75 to cruise altitude.
  • MAX Power
- Drag index of 60 or less, climb at 350 KCAS to M0.95, then maintain M0.95 to cruise altitude. If speed increases above M0.95 at 40° pitch attitude, maintain 40° pitch attitude.
- Drag index greater than 60, climb at 350 KCAS to M0.9, then maintain M0.9 to cruise altitude.
  • Drag Index
- A/A - No fueltanks ≈ 45
- A/A - 2x fueltanks ≈ 60
- A/G - 2x fueltanks ≈ 60<

Landing

You find the approach/landing checklist here.

Land using Overhead Break as explained here*

* Stay at ≈210kts on downwind leg until base turn. Aim to roll out on final with threshold at -3° and α20-22

En Route

Inflight

Performance Altitude AoA
Max Range -25000 ft α14
25000< α14.5
Max Endurance -25000 ft α18
25000< α17

- If not max range/endurace is needed, cruise at M0.8-0.85
- To make it easier for wingman to follow, FL should set a FTIT.

Tactical Formations

F-15E Procedure En Route Light.png

Formations explained here.

  • Formations:
- Route ≈ two ship widths
- Spred - up to 500ft
- Tactical - 500ft up to 2NM line abreast
- Link16 Tactical - (BVR) Not available yet
  • Visual references for "finger tip":
- Align UHF antenna (Behind cockpit) and either the missile rail or the Position- and Anti-Col.lights on the wing root.
- Align the trailing edges of the vertical stabilizors.
  • Visual signals:
- Yaw (pedal left and right) - Go to Route
- TBD - Spread
- Tumble (down and up) - Go to Tactical
- Quick wingflick - Wingman cross over to other side.
- Wing Rocking - Rejoin

Ingress

Target Area Ingress Preparations (Fence In)

On FL order "Fence IN"

  • Pilot setup/check:
- Master Arm Switch to ARM
- MPDs/MPCD as desired
- Turn OFF exterior lights
When done and WSO reports done, Check total fuel quantity and report "Fenced In, Fuel x,x" (x,x= fuel in thousands of lbs with one decimal. 8300 lbs => 8.3)
  • WSO setup/check:
- Weapons as required
- TGP to ON, lasercode
- Countermeasures to SEMI/AUTO
- Target-/waypoints as briefed
- MPDs/MPCDs as desired
- Comms
- Radar channel and freq.band*
Report done to pilot

*According to SOP

Disengagement and Egress

Target Area Egress (Fence Out)

On FL order "Fence OUT"

  • Pilot setup/check:
- Master Arm Switch to SAFE
- Turn ON exterior lights
- Check Master Caution light and Warning Lights for any system failures
When done and WSO reports done, Check total fuel quantity and report "Fenced Out, Fuel x,x" (x,x= fuel in thousands of lbs with one decimal. 8300 lbs => 8.3)
